Why settings matter in North QLD.

In our climate, the fastest way to a smelly, gunked-up split isn’t dirt – it’s moisture left sitting on the coil and in the drain tray. The right settings keep the system drier, which means less biofilm, less mould, and fewer cleans needed. Here’s your maintenance cheat sheet.

The Maintenance Settings Cheat Sheet

1) End-of-day “dry out” (prevents mould & slime)

  • If available: Turn on Self-Clean / X-FAN / Anti-Mould (fan runs briefly after cooling to dry the coil).
  • No self-clean? After you’re comfy, switch to FAN mode for 15-20 minutes before turning off.
  • Why it works: Dry coil = less biofilm, fewer blockages in the drain.

2) Don’t chase 18 °C

  • Run COOL at 24-25 °C and add a ceiling fan for comfort.
  • Why: Every extra degree you drop creates more condensation, feeding slime growth in the pan and drain.

3) Use DRY as a maintenance tool

  • On sticky days, run DRY for 30-45 minutes at midday (doors/windows shut).
  • Why: Keeping indoor humidity <60% RH means the coil and blower don’t stay damp-less mould, fewer smells.

4) Airflow to avoid “dirty smile” walls

  • Set the louvre to blow across the room (slightly upward), not straight down the wall.
  • Why: Reduces dust streaking around the head unit and keeps the fascia cleaner.

5) High fan to pull down, Auto to cruise

  • Start with High fan for 10-15 minutes, then switch to Auto.
  • Why: Good airflow clears moisture quickly; Auto prevents the coil sitting “cold-and-wet” for hours.

6) Sleep/Eco at night

  • Use SLEEP/ECO so the setpoint nudges up as you sleep.
  • Why: Shorter compressor run = less condensate left sitting in the tray till morning.

7) Keep grease/soot away

  • Avoid running the split while frying, burning candles/incense, or using heavy aerosols nearby.
  • Why: Oily particles stick to the blower wheel and coil, accelerating gunk.
Quick rule of thumb: Dry coil = clean coil. A few smart settings mean fewer leaks, less smell, and longer gaps between professional deep cleans.

FAQs

No. It extends the time between deep cleans by reducing moisture and growth, but filters and coils still need routine care.

Check monthly in the Wet, every 6-8 weeks otherwise. Dusty homes or pets = more frequent checks.

Very little. The fan sip is tiny compared to the compressor; the dryness you gain prevents bigger problems later.

Persistent musty smellvisible slime in the drain, drips indoors, or reduced airflow even with clean filters.
